Video Summary
PCI hosted a webinar explaining how PRECAS supports development and adoption of ACI/PCI Code 319.25 for structural precast concrete. The moderator covered logistics (handouts, muted lines, Q&A, recording, and 1 PDH via RSEP; no AIA credit). Presenter Edith Gallendorm (PCI Director of Codes and Standards) outlined learning objectives: document types (white papers, recommended practices, standards), how ACI/PCI 319 is adopted, how it’s organized and used, and benefits of adoption.

Gallendorm reviewed why building codes exist (public safety), how model codes (now primarily IBC) are adopted and amended by states, and how standards become enforceable only when adopted. She summarized the lengthy ICC code-change cycle and how standards coordinate across multi-year timelines.

PCI’s role since 1954 includes maintaining extensive technical guidance, including the PCI Design Handbook. Because the Handbook is not written in mandatory code language, PCI became an ANSI-accredited standards developer (2014) to produce auditable consensus standards more easily referenced by jurisdictions.

ACI/PCI 319 emerged after ACI 318’s reorganization, to better manage precast-specific provisions. ACI 318-25 permits designers to use ACI/PCI 319-25 (not mandatory). IBC 2027 will reference/require parts of 319 for some systems (e.g., intermediate precast shear walls). The code mirrors ACI 318 numbering, using “see 318” references and copied sections.

Key advantages include newly codified provisions (e.g., slender spandrels, corbels/brackets limits, dapped/notched ends, intermediate precast wall joints, diaphragm pour strips, PCI effective shear friction, and analytical strength evaluation). In Q&A, Gallendorm emphasized consistency: don’t mix provisions between codes once a design path is chosen.
