Video Summary
The webinar introduced ANSI/PCI 142-24, a new specification for precast prestressed concrete piles. PCI developed the standard to address conflicting pile provisions across building, bridge, and marine codes, provide common guidance for performance-based seismic design, and make research easier to incorporate into practice.

The specification contains four chapters covering general requirements, materials, geotechnical design and testing, and structural analysis, design, and detailing. It defines key terms and clarifies which pile-related topics are included or excluded. Material provisions address cementitious materials, aggregates, water, admixtures, and reinforcement. Geotechnical provisions cover site investigations, capacity determination, load testing, and safety factors.

Structural requirements address pile stability, serviceability, strength design, and transverse reinforcement. Piles are classified as ordinary, intermediate, or special according to their seismic detailing and expected ductility. The standard provides both prescriptive and performance-based seismic design approaches, with enhanced reinforcement concentrated in regions expected to undergo inelastic hinging. It also addresses pile splices, pile-cap connections, and capacity protection. The presentation emphasized that the standard works alongside the applicable general code, which supplies many of the underlying design equations and requirements.
