Pdf Summary
ANSI/PCI 142-24 establishes minimum requirements for designing and constructing precast, prestressed concrete piles. PCI developed the standard to address conflicting provisions across building, bridge, and marine codes; support consistent adoption; reflect updated research; and accommodate performance-based design. It complements the legally adopted “general code,” but its own material, design, and construction provisions take precedence over referenced standards where they conflict.

The standard covers fully and partially laterally braced piles, including seismic design and detailing. It does not govern nonprestressed or non-post-tensioned precast piles, hollow piles designed for inelastic behavior, or pile caps and specified pile connections and accessories.

Its four chapters address general requirements and definitions; material requirements; geotechnical design and testing; and structural analysis, design, and detailing. Chapter 2 specifies acceptable cementitious materials, aggregates, water, admixtures, and reinforcement. Chapter 3 requires geotechnical investigations and sets methods and safety factors for determining compression, tension, and lateral capacities, along with requirements for test piles.

Chapter 4 addresses pile bracing, effective length, second-order effects, serviceability, allowable-stress and strength design, and detailing. It offers prescriptive and performance-based approaches to seismic design. Piles are classified as ordinary, intermediate, or special according to expected curvature ductility; intermediate and special piles generally require increased transverse reinforcement for confinement. Performance-based design uses nonlinear analysis, soil–structure interaction, material strain limits, and pile displacement capacity to assess seismic performance. The chapter also provides requirements for pile splices and pile-to-cap connections, generally referring these to the governing general code.

Overall, ANSI/PCI 142-24 brings geotechnical, structural, materials, testing, and seismic provisions for precast, prestressed concrete piles into a unified specification.
