Pdf Summary
The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is looking for innovative ways to construct bridges more efficiently and cost-effectively. They have been using precast, prestressed concrete panels as stay-in-place forms for bridge decks, but the method for constructing overhang sections still requires conventional brackets and formwork. TxDOT sponsored a research project in 2008 to develop a precast, prestressed concrete overhang panel system that could improve construction speed, safety, and cost. Results from the project showed that the flexural and shear capacities of the precast system were comparable to conventionally cast-in-place concrete decks.

The precast, prestressed concrete overhang panel system consists of a combination of full-depth and partial-depth panels that extend from the first interior girder to the edge of the slab. The full-depth portion of the panel serves as a work platform and allows the screed to be placed directly over the girder line. Leveling bolts are cast into the overhang panels to allow for adjustment and grading during construction. Shear connectors extend from the top of the girder into shear pockets in the overhang panels to provide composite action between the girder and the panels.

TxDOT successfully implemented the precast, prestressed concrete overhang panel system on the Farm-to-Market Road 1885 Bridge over Rock Creek. Although there was no significant reduction in construction time due to the learning curve for all involved, there was an improvement in safety and convenience. The sturdy work platform provided by the panels eliminated the need for overhang brackets and formwork. The precast system shows great promise for future deck construction. Overall, TxDOT is constantly seeking innovative methods to accelerate bridge construction, improve work zone safety, and reduce costs.
