Video Summary
PCI hosted a webinar titled “Transitioning to BIM in Precast: the Edge Software Bridge from 2D Workflows,” presented by Edge Software’s Therese Turner, Sandra Spurlock, and CEO Doug Turk. The session contrasted traditional 2D precast workflows—static, line-based drawings with no embedded intelligence—with BIM’s model-driven approach. Speakers emphasized how 2D processes rely on manual interpretation for weights, embeds, reinforcement, and quantities, often causing late-discovered errors, rework, and coordination conflicts. Updating changes across multiple views and schedules is also labor-intensive and inconsistent in 2D.

BIM, built on Autodesk Revit (“Revise Instantly”), enables coordinated, constructible models where clashes are found earlier and quantities are derived directly from geometry, improving procurement and scheduling predictability. For precast specifically, Edge’s Revit-based tools (EdgeR, EdgeCAM, EdgeERP, EdgeCloud) support fabrication-level modeling, standardized families, embedded reinforcement logic, automated rebar marking, and ticket generation via Edge Ticket Manager, keeping drawings, schedules, and revisions tied to a single source of truth. The model’s structured data can also integrate with ERP for purchasing, inventory, and production tracking.

They addressed adoption hurdles—training/learning curve, upfront investment, workflow disruption, and governance—and recommended early team engagement, clear BIM ownership/standards, and intentional phased onboarding. Edge also offers a short proof-of-concept program with support to ease implementation.
