Pdf Summary
This document provides an overview of a webinar on ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC), hosted by the Regional Chapters of the Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute. The presenters, John Lawler and Maher Tadros, discuss the fundamentals of PCI-UHPC, its manufacturing process, and its wide range of structural and architectural applications.

UHPC is a cementitious material that has superior tensile strength, ductility, and durability compared to conventional concrete. It is characterized by ultra-high compressive strength and high pre- and post-cracking tensile strength. UHPC is made with low water-to-cement ratio, silica fume, fine sand, fibers, and superplasticizer.

The material properties of UHPC are significantly different from conventional concrete. It has higher compressive and tensile strength, modulus of elasticity, and freeze-thaw resistance, while exhibiting lower shrinkage and chloride diffusion coefficient. Steel fibers are essential in achieving the high tensile properties of UHPC.

In terms of structural design, flexural strength, shear strength, interface shear, and punching shear are important considerations. UHPC allows for the design of thin members, reduces the need for reinforcement, and offers advantages such as lighter weight, longer spans, and cost-effectiveness.

Various applications of UHPC are showcased, including bridge components, precast slabs, piles, and building systems. Examples from the US, Canada, and other countries demonstrate the versatility and potential of UHPC in the construction industry.

Architectural applications of UHPC, such as façades and furniture, are also highlighted. UHPC can be used to create visually appealing and durable designs.

Overall, UHPC is a game-changer in the precast concrete industry, offering superior performance and innovative design possibilities. The webinar aims to provide valuable insights and guidelines for professionals interested in using UHPC in their projects.
