This course is the first in a four-part series on prestressed concrete piles. It presents highlights of the second edition of the Recommended Practice for Design, Manufacture, and Installation of Prestressed Concrete Piling, including recommendations and guidelines for the design and detailing of prestressed concrete piles based on current knowledge and standards.

After completing the course, the student will be able to:

  • Understand the reasons for the revision of PCI’s Recommended Practice for Design, Manufacture, and Installation of Prestressed Concrete Piling
  • Discuss the differences in pile design philosophies among building, bridge, and marine applications
  • Identify the effects of various cementitious materials and admixtures on concrete mixture behavior
  • Design transverse reinforcement (spiral) in prestressed concrete piles according to area of seismicity
  • Understand the manufacturing, handling, and installation processes for prestressed concrete piles
