Building Codes/Standards, such as IBC and ASCE7, require every structure to be constructed to resist the effects of earthquake motions
Each structure is assigned to a Seismic Design Category (SDC)
SDC categories range from A to F
SDC is determined based on
- Geographical location (e.g., proximity to the fault lines)
- Underlying soil condition (site class)
- Building use (risk category)
Design and detailing code requirements vary with SDC
This lecture will illustrate seismic design of a parking structure in SDC-B
SDC-A requirements (Structural Integrity) apply to all SDCs as a minimum
