PCI Online Academy: Lateral Loads Session 3
Session 3 Outline
  • Building Codes/Standards, such as IBC and ASCE7, require every structure to be constructed to resist the effects of earthquake motions
  • Each structure is assigned to a Seismic Design Category (SDC)
  • SDC categories range from A to F
  • SDC is determined based on
    • Geographical location (e.g., proximity to the fault lines)
    • Underlying soil condition (site class)
    • Building use (risk category)
  • Design and detailing code requirements vary with SDC
  • This lecture will illustrate seismic design of a parking structure in SDC-B
  • SDC-A requirements (Structural Integrity) apply to all SDCs as a minimum
