Rigging Equipment: Recommended Inspection and Maintenance
Description
This presentation focuses on several common types of rigging equipment used to handle precast concrete components in the plant and field. It covers the requirements for the identification and inspection of the rigging, including the appropriate OSHA and ASME safety standards applicable to rigging equipment. Some of the use criteria, including things to be cautious of and the proper handling of the rigging, is also discussed.

Presenters

Carl L. Harris, FPCI is Vice-President and co-founder of Carl Harris Co. Inc., a specialty contracting firm that has been a PCI-certified erector in all categories. Carl, who has been active with PCI since 1999, is a PCI-certified field auditor, company auditor, and lead auditor for the Certified Erector Program. He has co-chaired the Erector Committee and chaired the Certified Erector Committee and currently serves on the Tolerance Committee, Personnel Certification Committee, Erector Safety Task Group, and Quality Assurance Supplier Committee.
Carl is very involved in his local community’s building industry and served Newton, Kans., as city commissioner and as mayor for two terms. At the national level, he has advised the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and testified in congressional hearings regarding OSHA, federal regulations, and their effects on small business.
Carl is an OSHA-authorized trainer for the OSHA Satellite Training Facility in Wichita, Kans., for the Metropolitan Community College, Kansas City, Mo., and has been an AWS Certified Weld Inspector (CWI) since 2003.



Michael (Mike) Wolff, FPCI is the President and Owner of Wolff Safety Consulting.  As a consultant, he is instrumental in auditing and developing safety programs including training for a variety of industries including precast concrete crane certifications and rigging.  Mike was Vice President of Safety and Quality for Mid-States Concrete Industries in South Beloit, IL., where he worked for 18 years. He is especially proud to have achieved the Safety & Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP) Award for Mid-States Concrete, given by OSHA. Mike has been a member of PCI since 2007 serving on eleven different committees and currently is the Chairman of the PCI Impartiality Committee and Chairman of the Quality Activities Council.  He was instrumental in developing the QA Supplier Committee and has created multiple educational products for members including the Coil Insert Alert and Webinar, Ring and Clutch Inspection Webinar, and Rigging Inspection Criteria.Mike has also served as President of the PCI IL/WI Chapter and is an active Certified Company Auditor for PCI. Wolff is an OSHA Authorized Trainer for General Industry and Construction and has developed safety internship positions for students while serving on the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Safety Construction Advisory Board.  He achieved PCI Fellow award in 2022.
