Pdf Summary
This paper presents an analysis of full-depth precast concrete bridge deck panels for bridge deck replacement and rehabilitation. The paper focuses on the consideration of longitudinal post-tensioning in the design of these panels. The analysis was performed using finite element modeling of selected simply supported and continuous bridges. The objective of the study was to determine the amount of post-tensioning needed in the longitudinal direction to secure the tightness of the transverse joints and keep them in compression. The results indicate that a minimum prestress level of 200 psi is needed for simply supported bridges, while a prestress level of 450 psi is needed over the interior supports for continuous bridges. The study concludes that full-depth precast concrete bridge deck panels, when properly designed and installed, can be a viable alternative for the replacement and rehabilitation of deteriorated bridge decks. The findings of this study have been applied in several bridge deck replacement projects in Illinois.

The paper also discusses the durability, performance, and cost-effectiveness of these precast bridge deck panels. The advantages of using precast panels include minimal interference with traffic, reduced construction time, and the ability to maintain traffic in both directions during the rehabilitation process. The study recommends the use of a two-phase construction plan or weekend/night closures to minimize traffic disruption. The paper concludes that precast and prestressed concrete components are effective in the design and construction of bridges and highway systems.

The findings of this study have practical applications in bridge deck replacement projects. The Illinois Department of Transportation has implemented the design recommendations and construction procedures outlined in this study in several bridge projects. These include bridges over I-74 in Knox County and bridges over Interstate I-57 in Williamson and Champaign Counties. The use of full-depth precast concrete bridge deck panels in these projects has resulted in reduced construction time and improved durability and performance of the bridge decks.
