Pdf Summary
A study conducted by Mohsen A. Issa, Jasha S. Salas, Hameed I. Shabila, and Rajai Z. Airousan from the Department of Civil and Materials Engineering at the University of Illinois at Chicago examined the use of precast concrete panels as a replacement for bridge decks. The study found that using full-depth precast concrete panels offered advantages in terms of construction speed, durability, and composite action. The researchers tested push-out specimens with shear pockets in the concrete slabs to determine the ultimate strength and failure mode of the shear connection system. The results showed that threaded steel bolts were effective in allowing the precast concrete panels and girders to achieve full composite action. It was also determined that the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) load and resistance factor design guidelines conservatively estimated the design strength of the shear connection system. The study concluded that using threaded steel bolts as shear connectors is a viable option for achieving full composite action between precast concrete panels and girders in bridge deck replacement systems.
