Pdf Summary
The use of precast concrete for bridge construction and rehabilitation has increased in popularity due to its advantages such as durability, ease and speed of construction, and reduced maintenance. Precast elements like box girder segments and I girder sections are commonly used in bridge construction. Other precast elements include concrete deck panels and integral girder curtain wall components. The precast elements are connected using epoxy mortar or high strength bolts. Transportation agencies like the NYSTA and the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission have successfully used precast concrete for bridge deck projects. Full-depth precast concrete decks have been used since the late 1960s for rapid construction of bridges in congested areas. They have been successful for both highway and railway bridges and offer advantages such as improved riding quality and increased durability. Ongoing research is being conducted to further improve the performance and cost-effectiveness of full-depth precast concrete decks.
